The reasons for the hasty increase in data are, in addition to the digitization of content and the exchange of data, above all the integration of digital measurement, control and regulation systems - embedded systems - also in everyday objects and the communication of this data with "intelligent environments". The internet and social networks also contribute to this. The generation and acquisition of data and their transmission is easy and ubiquitous today. However, the processing of the large, heterogeneous amounts of data generated in this way has reached its limits. bolts
“Big Data”, the synonym for the intelligent handling of such large or heterogeneous amounts of data, is one of the major challenges of our time. From a scientific, economic and social perspective, big data technologies can have a major impact in the future. To the same extent that the amount of data available in many industries and fields of application increases, new opportunities for business and science can be opened up in these areas through the use of intelligent technologies. The topic of big data has a broad impact that goes far beyond the pure ICT economy and promises high added value for society as a whole, but at the same time requires particularly responsible handling.
The Centralized Ministry of Education and Research
specifically supports research on the handling of large amounts of data in
Germany. In addition, there were the following two announcements:
• Announcement of the Federal Ministry of Education and
Research of guidelines for the promotion of competence centers for the
intelligent handling of large amounts of data (big data)
• Announcement of the Federal Ministry of Education and
Research of guidelines for the funding of research projects in the field of
"Management and Analysis of Large Data Amounts (Big Data)"
After assessing the project outlines submitted for the
announcements, competence centers and research projects were selected for
funding.
Expert conference ABIDA
As part of the ABIDA
accompanying big data research project, an expert conference took place on
October 17 and 18, 2018 at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in
Berlin. At the event, the authors of the external ABIDA reports presented and
discussed their results, from which concrete recommendations for action for the
individual actors were derived. In addition, the previous results of the ABIDA
project were presented. The panel discussion on the second day gave new
impulses for further research content and goals.
"Huge Information", the equivalent word for the
astute treatment of such huge or heterogeneous measures of information, is one
of the significant difficulties within recent memory. From a logical, financial
and social point of view, enormous information advances can have a significant
effect later on. Similarly that how much information accessible in numerous
ventures and fields of use increments, new freedoms for business and science
can be opened up here using insightful advances. The subject of large
information has an expansive effect that goes a long ways past the
unadulterated ICT economy and guarantees high added an incentive for society in
general, and yet requires especially dependable taking care.
